“Invest in Ashong, invest in prosperity.” This is the rallying call from Fon Mbafor Christopher III, who says his fondom is once again open for business following a return to calm in Cameroon’s Northwest Region.

The Fon of Ashong has extended a warm invitation to investors, stressing that peace has gradually returned to the fondom after years of socio-political unrest.

“The atmosphere is calm; come and see for yourself,” he said. “During the difficult days, I could not even sit comfortably at home, but now all is well. Even the youths are back, organizing their convention in the village — it is a sign that peace has truly returned.”

Ashong, located in Batibo Subdivision of Momo Division in the Northwest Region, is a second-class fondom with a population of over 15,000 inhabitants. It shares boundaries with neighbouring communities, including Wabane.

Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing socio-political crisis, the fondom has recorded notable development strides.

“We are going step by step,” the Fon explained, referring to the rehabilitation of the village water scheme and the construction of a 30-cubic-metre reservoir. “We have achieved about 85 to 90 percent of the work, and it is still ongoing. The reservoir will solve our water problems, and we are confident it will make a huge difference in the lives of our people.”

He also highlighted progress in the health sector, noting the presence of three Government Health Centers and a Baptist hospital serving the population.

“Health is wealth,” he said. “We are committed to ensuring that our people have access to quality healthcare.”

However, he acknowledged that significant gaps remain. “The State cannot provide everything. We need more support to ensure that our medical centers are fully equipped and staffed. The medical doctor is on and off, and we require more nurses and equipment to serve our people effectively.”

A major upcoming project is the construction of a multipurpose hall, for which CFA 16 million has already been raised. The facility is expected to serve as a center for youth empowerment and community activities.

“Youths want freedom,” the Fon said. “We will provide a space where they can express themselves, showcase their talents and contribute meaningfully to the development of Ashong.”

Bridges are also under construction to improve accessibility within the fondom.

Nonetheless, the Fon lamented the limited support from local councils, many of which remain affected by the crisis. “Almost all councils are non-functional. The Batibo Council is operating from Bamenda, and we are barely getting any support. We are benefiting very minimally, but we are not giving up.”

Concluding his appeal, Fon Mbafor Christopher III described Ashong as a land rich in opportunity.

“Ashong is blessed with natural resources and resilient people. We are determined to move forward. We invite investors to come and partner with us. Invest in Ashong, and together, we can build a brighter future for our community.”
