FECAFOOT Backtracks On Marc Brys’ Resignation But Accuses Coach Of Falsehood

The Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT, has resolved the dispute with Marc Brys, confirming his continuation as head coach of the Indomitable Lions after previously insisting that the Belgian had resigned.

In a statement released Thursday, July 31, FECAFOOT ended days of uncertainty and reaffirmed a commitment to collaborating with the head coach ahead of important international competitions for the Indomitable Lions.

The saga began when FECAFOOT announced on July 23, 2025, that Marc Brys had resigned via a registered letter dated July 21, citing unpaid salaries as the reason.

The Belgian coach swiftly denied the claim, asserting on national television that his email had been hacked and that he had not resigned.

The Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, Brys’s employer, supported his claim and questioned the authenticity of the letter FECAFOOT purported to have received. Minister Narcise Mouelle Kombi claimed his office had not been notified about Marc Brys’ resignation.

FECAFOOT initially stood firm, insisting the resignation letter was genuine and condemned Brys for what it called “falsehoods” aimed at discrediting the federation.

“In an apparent attempt to discredit its actions and evade responsibility for his own decisions, Mr. Marc Brys has broadcast falsehoods on the airwaves of a public service media outlet,” FECAFOOT stated in the recent statement.

The federation also expressed concern over the lack of a preliminary investigation into the letter’s authenticity, noting that salary payment delays were likely at the root of the issue.

However, in a constructive turn, FECAFOOT’s Emergency Committee, led by President Samuel Eto’o, announced a resolution.

“The Emergency Committee has decided to acknowledge the desire expressed by both parties to the contract to continue the contractual relationship between the Government and Mr. Marc Brys,” Eto’o wrote.

He emphasised the federation’s commitment to a “calm and peaceful environment” in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports.

The decision to retain Brys comes at a time when Cameroon is preparing for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, which holds in Morocco in five months’ time.

The country is also playing qualification matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Brys, who was appointed in April 2024 by the Ministry of Sports, has led the Indomitable Lions to an impressive record of eight wins, five draws, and one loss, positioning them second in their World Cup qualifying group, one point behind Cape Verde.

Cameroon faces a challenging AFCON group alongside Ivory Coast, Gabon, and Mozambique.

“The Federation expresses the hope that this disposition will help maintain an atmosphere conducive to performance both within the team camp and the administrative environment of the national team,” FECAFOOT noted in its recent statement.

By resolving the dispute, FECAFOOT and Brys aim to refocus on preparing the Indomitable Lions for their upcoming challenges, including a World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde in September.
