MND 6th Follow-Up Committee Meeting To Consolidate Peace Convenes Tomorrow

PM Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute

Cameroon’s journey towards sustainable peace and stability takes another crucial step tomorrow, March 18, 2025, as the 6th session of the follow-up committee on implementing Major National Dialogue recommendations convenes in Yaounde. Chaired by Prime Minister Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute, this pivotal meeting aims to consolidate peace and stability in the Northwest and Southwest regions, building on the progress made since the historic Major National Dialogue in 2019.

The crucial session begins at 10 am tomorrow March 18, 2025, at the auditorium of the Prime Minister’s office. The Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute will chair it.

This session is expected to serve as a crucial step towards consolidating peace and stability in the North West and South West regions.

The historic Major National Dialogue, which took place in 2019, rallied various stakeholders to discuss and seek lasting solutions to the crises affecting the English-speaking regions of the country. The Major National Dialogue resulted in several key recommendations, including the reconstruction of the affected regions, the granting of special status to the Northwest and Southwest regions, and the promotion of bilingualism and multiculturalism.

Since then, the government has made significant progress in implementing these recommendations. For instance, the Presidential Plan for Reconstruction and Development of the Northwest and Southwest Regions, PPRD-NW/SW was established to oversee the reconstruction of the affected regions.  Additionally, the government has taken steps to promote bilingualism and multiculturalism, including the creation of the National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism, the setting up of two regional Assemblies and houses of chiefs in the Northwest and Southwest Regions as well as the creation of the Public Independent Conciliator office.

Despite these efforts, there is still much work to be done. The follow-up committee meeting on Tuesday will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to assess the progress made so far and discuss ways to tackle the challenges.

It will also provide a unique opportunity for the government to reaffirm its commitment to implementing the recommendations of the Major National Dialogue.

As the nation walks on the path towards sustainable peace and stability, the successful implementation of the Major National Dialogue recommendations is crucial. The 6th follow-up committee meeting is set to set a new tone in the implementation process.

Tomorrow’s meeting will bring together local and national stakeholders to chart feasible options towards concretising the impact of the major national dialogue.
