The Representative and Country Director of the World Food Programme, WFP, in Cameroon, Gianluca Ferrera, has reiterated WFP’s continuous support for populations affected by crises in the country.

He made the statement on Tuesday, August 5, in Yaoundé, shortly after an audience granted to him by the Minister of Economy, Planning, and Regional Development, Alamine Ousmane Mey.

Speaking after the audience, Gianluca Ferrera praised the quality of the discussions: “We had an excellent and constructive exchange with His Excellency the Minister. We discussed the progress of our cooperation, particularly with regard to humanitarian action, which is at the heart of the WFP’s mandate.”

The UN diplomat added that his organisation would continue to work to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable populations in the short term, particularly in areas affected by security, food, or climate crises.

The meeting between the Minister and the WFP Country Director provided an opportunity to examine how to maintain the effectiveness of the WFP’s support in Cameroon. The discussions also focused on the implementation of the WFP Country Strategic Plan (CSP) for 2022–2026, the WFP’s contributions to the government’s agricultural development and school feeding initiatives, and challenges related to resource mobilisation.

Cooperation between Cameroon and the WFP is governed by the 2022–2026 Country Strategic Plan (CSP). With a budget of nearly $730 million, or approximately FCFA 492.5 billion, the plan serves as the main instrument of collaboration. It is aligned with the priorities of the National Development Strategy 2020–2030 (SND30) and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal No. 2 (Zero Hunger).

The WFP participates in the implementation of flagship programmes such as the National School Feeding Programme and the Emergency Project to Combat the Food Crisis (PULCCA), which is financed by the World Bank.
