President Paul Biya has urged Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses to remain disciplined, united and supportive of one another as they prepare for new challenges after their historic 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) triumph.
Biya made the call on Saturday, August 22, at the Unity Palace in Yaoundé, where he hosted a state reception to celebrate the team’s first-ever WAFCON title, won in Morocco.
Receiving the newly crowned champions, the Head of State praised their determination and resilience, particularly after previous attempts to win the continental crown ended in disappointment.
“Your exemplary track record should be a source of inspiration for our people, and especially for our youth,” Biya said, noting that the team’s journey had lessons that extended beyond football.
He said the victory was built on courage, commitment, talent and collective strength.
“You thrilled us throughout the matches with your courage, determination, commitment and talent,” he told the players.
The President also singled out goalkeeper Michaely Bihina, midfielder Monique Ngock and other standout performers, while stressing that the team’s unity had been central to its success.
“You amazed us with the performances of Bihina, Monique Ngock and many others, but above all, with the sturdiness of your collective,” he said.
Biya said the Lionesses had demonstrated the importance of perseverance by refusing to be discouraged by previous defeats.
“You did not lose heart. You picked yourselves up. You worked hard. You remained focused. You tried, and tried again, over and over. And in the end, you made it,” he said.
Looking ahead, the President assured the team of continued state support but warned that greater challenges lay ahead.
“Other more daunting challenges lie ahead. I therefore urge you to stay the course, by remaining disciplined, united and supportive of one another,” he said.
He ended his address with an appeal to the champions to continue delivering success for the country: “Keep it up! Keep making us dream! Keep winning and honouring your country.”
The reception also marked Biya’s second official public appearance since the May 20 National Day celebrations, following an extended stay in Europe.
His appearance at the high-profile ceremony came amid public speculation over his prolonged absence from the country and limited public appearances.
