As global leaders gather in Yaoundé for the upcoming World Trade Organization (WTO) 14thMinisterial Conference (MC14), discussions will centre on trade, markets, and economic cooperation. Yet, beneath these traditional themes lies a more transformative force, Artificial Intelligence (AI) rapidly reshaping the global economy. For Africa, this is not just another conference. It is a defining moment.
A Journey from Telecommunications To AI
My journey began in 1999 as a young Cameroonian undergraduate student studying Telecommunications Engineering in Russia. At the time, Africa was already trailing in the digital revolution. Access to advanced technologies was limited, and the gap with developed economies was widening. In 2008, during my PhD research at Michigan State University, I began working in Machine Learning, the foundation of modern AI. My first research publication in AI came in 2010, where we applied machine learning to solve a complex industrial problem in the automotive sector. At the time, AI was largely academic. Today, it is everywhere. From finance and healthcare to energy and manufacturing, AI is now driving efficiency, innovation, and measurable economic value. I have witnessed this evolution firsthand; from research labs to real-world impact, including my work as a former NASA Engineer and now as a Senior AI Predictive Analytics professional with Siemens Energy, Inc.in the United States of America.
Why The WTO Summit Matters for Africa
The WTO MC14 Business Forum in Yaoundé comes at a time when digital trade and emerging technologies are becoming central to global economic discussions. This is Africa’s chance to:
✓ Advocate for inclusion in the digital economy
✓ Strengthen capacity in emerging technologies
✓ Position itself as a competitive player in AI-driven trade
But policy alone will not transform economies; people will.
AI: The New Engine of Economic Power
AI is no longer a future concept; it is a present-day economic driver. Companies are using AI to increase profitability, optimize operations, and make faster, data-driven decisions. Nations are leveraging it to strengthen competitiveness, improve public services, and accelerate growth. This shift is redefining global trade itself. The question for Africa is simple: Will we participate or lead?
Africa’s Opportunity to Leap Forward
Africa has long struggled to keep pace with previous industrial revolutions. Limited infrastructure and late adoption often placed the continent at a disadvantage. But AI changes the equation. Unlike traditional industries, AI is driven more by knowledge and skills than heavy infrastructure. This creates a rare opportunity for Africa to leap forward and compete globally. With the youngest population in the world and a rapidly growing digital ecosystem, Africa is uniquely positioned to benefit. However, this opportunity will only be realized if we act deliberately.
AI is Not Only for Engineers
One of the biggest misconceptions about AI is that it is reserved for engineers, scientists, or technical professionals. This is no longer true. AI is a tool, and like any powerful tool, it can be used by anyone who understands how to apply it. Business leaders, marketers, fintech professionals, healthcare workers, educators, entrepreneurs, and government professionals can all leverage AI to:
✓ Improve decision-making
✓ Automate repetitive tasks
✓ Unlock new revenue streams
✓ Drive innovation in their fields
You do not need to be a programmer to benefit from AI. You need to understand how to use it strategically.
Democratizing AI: The Mission of The Ai Training Hub LLC
This belief is at the core of The Ai Training Hub LLC, a forward-thinking organization I founded to democratize access to AI education. Our philosophy is simple: “Unleash your potential, empower your future.” We are building a new generation of professionals, both technical and nontechnical, who can confidently use AI to create value in businesses and organizations. At the Hub, we emphasize:
✓ AI from complexity to simplicity
✓ Practical, hands-on learning
✓ Real-world business applications
✓ Accessibility for individuals with no coding background
AI should not be a privilege for a few. It should be an opportunity for all.
From Skills to Economic Transformation
As a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, I have spent years driving business transformation through data, process optimization, and strategic implementation of AI. The lesson is clear: Sustainable economic growth comes from the ability to translate knowledge into action. For Africa, this means:
✓ investing in AI education at scale
✓ Empowering youth with practical, job-ready skills
✓ Encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation
✓ Building ecosystems that support digital transformation
When individuals are empowered, economies grow.
Africa’s Time Is Now
For decades, Africa has been described as “the continent of the future.” That future is no longer distant. It is here. AI has created a level playing field where talent, creativity, and knowledge matter more than geography. A young professional in Yaoundé, Casablanca, Nairobi, or Lagos can now compete globally with the right skills and mindset. This is unprecedented.
Conclusion: A Call to Action
As the world turns its attention to Yaoundé, Africa must seize this moment. We must move:
➢ From consumers to creators
➢ From observers to leaders
➢ From potential to performance
➢ The AI revolution is not waiting.
➢ And neither should we.
This is Africa’s time.
