The reception of the newly appointed leader for the youths of the Northwest Region in Bamenda recently was described by many as spectacular and remarkable. Given that many young people have grown frustrated under successive regimes in Cameroon, the crowning of a Youth Ambassador for the Northwest was a momentous occasion—one that drew significant attention.

The announcement of the ceremony, held at the esplanade of the Senior Divisional Officer for Mezam, set the stage for a historic event.

Dr Peter Taniform Ngwa was unanimously crowned the pioneer Northwest Youth Ambassador, tasked with championing the cause of the region’s young people.

In his keynote address, themed, “The Beginning of a New Dawn and a New Narrative for Northwest Youths,” Dr Taniform outlined a transformational agenda centred on three innovative ideas designed to unlock the full potential of the region’s youth.

The first initiative is a Youth Innovation Platform—a digital ecosystem where young people across the Northwest can credibly showcase their talents and business ideas. Dr Taniform explained that participants would be matched with companies and structured enterprises to guide them through their ventures. This breakthrough aims to bridge the gap between potential and opportunity by offering a secure, trusted environment for collaboration and development.

The second component focuses on a Youth Skill Registry, while the third and subsequent plans remain expansive.

Speakers at the event urged young people to foster peace across the region during this pivotal moment in the country’s history, emphasising that stability is essential for meaningful development.

Saidouna Ali, Secretary General at the Governor’s Office, stressed that the time to change the narrative is now. He encouraged youths to reject violence and remain committed to peace, particularly in the lead-up to, during, and after the presidential election in October.

“Peace, my young friends, is priceless,” he said. “With peace, development flourishes, and you can pursue your dreams. Always strive for peace.”

Meanwhile, Mekom Samuel Tale, President of the Northwest Youth Council, received a standing ovation for his numerous achievements in youth employment and training across the region. He claimed that at least 50% of the region’s youths are peace-loving and eager to contribute positively.

“The youths of the Northwest believe in me, and together, we shall work to restore this region’s greatness,” Mekom declared.
