The National Observatory on Climate Change, NOCC, has in its 10-day period (spanning August 11 to 20, 2025) weather forecast bulletin provided details on the persistent prevailing cold conditions being experienced in the southern part of Cameroon.

The areas concerned in the bulletin that was made public on August 11 include the Centre, South, East, West, Littoral, South-West and North-West Regions, as well as the southern limits of the Adamawa Region.

The Prof. Joseph Armathe Amougou-led NOCC notes that the areas are “highly under the strong influence of cold air masses originating from the southern hemisphere, around the Saint Helena island, which is the main driver of global atmospheric circulation in this part of the planet.

“This period characterised by extreme cold, which began some two months back (June 2025), corresponds to the season, in the southern hemisphere, from Antarctica up to South Africa. It is usually marked by very low temperatures, at times reaching peaks of -30°C in certain areas, associated with constantly strong and violent winds, blowing towards the equator.

Additionally, this period is also characterised by the constant presence of the South-West monsoon winds, a cool, humid wind that originates in the south-western part of the Atlantic Ocean, and blows north-eastwards,” the bulletin explains.

Based on the explanation above, the National Observatory on Climate Change is thus drawing the attention of the general public to the fact that these two combined climatic phenomena are behind the prevailing cold conditions being observed in the southern part of the country these days.

The bulletin notes that with regards to the potentially negative effects of the cold conditions on human and animal health, NOCC is recommending that the populations of these areas should put on thick and warm clothes as cold conditions persist; take hot drinks regularly; avoid exposure to windy conditions especially late at night; and improve the heating system in poultry farms.
