HRM Kenneth Khan Asobo III, Newly Entroned Paramount Fon of Pinyin Clan

By Etienne Nfor Liboh

His Royal Majesty Kenneth Khan Asobo III has been formally enthroned as the Paramount Fon of the Pinyin Clan, marking a significant milestone for the community. The ceremony, which took place on April 11, 2026, at the clan palace in Pinyin, Santa Subdivision, is widely seen as ushering in renewed hope for peace and development in one of the largest villages in the area.

The enthronement comes after nearly seven years during which the Pinyin throne remained vacant, a period marked by considerable challenges, particularly within the context of the ongoing Anglophone crisis. With the installation of a new traditional ruler, many inhabitants have expressed optimism that stability and progress will return to the community.

The ascension of HRM Kenneth Khan Asobo III follows his designation by Pinyin kingmakers in November 2025, a decision subsequently transmitted to the Northwest administrative authorities. A key highlight of the enthronement rites was the traditional “pebbling” ritual, believed to spiritually fortify the new ruler and empower him to protect his people from harm. The ceremony drew large crowds, including cultural dance groups from across Pinyin, reflecting the joy and anticipation of a people who had long waited this moment.

Among those in attendance was the Senior Divisional Officer (SDO) for Mezam, Simon Emile Mooh, who led the administrative delegation. He called on the new Fon to prioritize peace, unity, and harmonious coexistence, noting the diverse composition of the Pinyin population, including a significant Muslim community whose participation in the celebrations underscored the spirit of unity.

Speaking at the event, Barrister Achu Owen Tendeng, President of the Pinyin Cultural and Development Association, emphasised the need for collective support. He urged the population to stand firmly behind their new leader, stressing that collaboration would be essential for the Fon’s success and the overall development of the clan.

For many attendees, the ceremony was a rare and deeply emotional experience. One participant, Moma Jude Awa, described it as a once-in-a-lifetime event, expressing confidence that the presence of a recognized leader would enhance coordination within the community and help resolve disputes, including inter-family tensions and farmer–grazer conflicts.

The people of Pinyin have pledged their full support to the new Paramount Fon, a seasoned and retired CRTV journalist, as he begins his reign. The enthronement rites are expected to culminate in an official coronation ceremony scheduled for December 2026.
